Pure Cuteness

IMG_0496

I was in the house cooking dinner when  Micah came running in from picking up rocks in the yard. Daddy said for every tractor bucket they fill, they get $2. That’s a looot of rocks for $2.

Micah - "Mamma!? You know what your Micah did?"
Mamma - "No what?"
Micah - "He was such a brave man, he went under daddy's tractor and he DIDN'T get scared"
Mamma - "Really? That is a big tractor Micah."
Micah - "I witness you mamma, really, I did."

Suddenly distracted Micah runs away yelling "Hey Emma,  don't do dat, I, Micah, will go under dare and get that rock cuz I am a brave man!"

Looks like we have to revisit Proverbs 27:2

Dog T.V.

IMG_0443

Dog T.V. is worse than an evening campfire. Children stand there staring at her. Summer STILL has not had her pups. This tells me that these pups will belong to my backup stud, not my stud. Nice. There is nothing wrong with that, I guess, it just tells me my stud is not working yet. We are still estimating her litter at 40ish, can you make out her figure in the pic? She seriously looks like she swallowed a cantaloupe. We have lots of activities planned this weekend and I just hope she has them quickly and efficiently. I do worry a little about a c-sec as she is so big…time will tell.

IMG_0475

Gracie spends her summer days eating red sorrel and chickweed. As I type she is sitting outside my window in the flower garden plucking her little delicacies from among the weeds.

IMG_0470

She is covered with kitty scratches from the new kittens because, well, what better way to kittens teach toddlers respect for themselves?

*~Riley~*

IMG_0483

I totally forgot the reason why I even started posting New Addition(s) this last week. We got a replacement for Jake the Dog. Meet Riley. He is 80lbs of dopey chocolate lab. Riley is 15 and freshly flunked out of bomb sniffing dog school, hence he is a family dog now.

IMG_0482

Riley was recued from the pound by a training school in Custer, he fit their bill. Riley was flown with a trainer to Florida to attend basic training…his trainer said he was out the door as quickly as he was in the door because he was “A.D.D.”…their words.

IMG_0480

I am not one to promote Disney films at all, but we did see UP. Remember Doug? This is Doug in living color. Riley was created to be a family dog..he’s a lover, not a bomb sniffer. He LOVES the children, LOVES his ball, and LOVES the water.

2010 Chicken Butchering

IMG_0364

We’re moving up in the world, what can I say? After years of butchering by hand, enter the production line. We rented butchering equipment through our friends  the W’s last Saturday. Here is the set up line.

Before anything was started a prayer was given to our Lord for supplying these birds, their health, the hands who have so kindly offered their help and His goodness to us.

IMG_0366

Our birds last week were a trial run for this weekends butchering of gobs of chickens, I can’t remember the count, but between the W’s and Mr. C there are a LOT of birds going through.

IMG_0368

The two young men furthest away were

*The Killing Team*.

IMG_0369

Our 37 measly birds. We lost so many this year due to on the job accidents and the fact these birds were 9 & 11 weeks old. We butchered a few over the last week because they looked like they were going down. Typically the birds are butchered at 7 weeks.

IMG_0371

These are the killing cones. They hold the bird comfortably while the jugular is cut. I used to cringe at this way because the poor birds were left alive, but they actually die calmly looking around while their heart drains the bird. No more broken legs or wings from a headless chicken flopping around on the ground. My opinion is the meat overall is better quality.

IMG_0379

Mr W manned the scalder. It had to be timed just right as to make the feathers come out easily AND not scald the skin so it would fall off. He did great!

IMG_0373

The Chicken Plucker. This thing was so slick! It was comical just watching it, very entertaining.

IMG_0375

Next on the line was Daniel . He was Mr. Headtakeroffer, Wingchopperoffer and Legseparator

IMG_0380

I had to add this pic. I must of said somethin funny.

IMG_0381

You go Daniel.

Umm..I want ya’ll to notice here how BIG this chicken is. Picture it in a 9x13, it’s as good as a small turkey. (Note to self- pay a little more attention to the timing next time)

IMG_0391

The women in the back were the Quality Control team… ;) This was the K & C Family’s first time watching a butcher and it took a little desensitizing on her part at first. Later that evening we went to their house and butchered their 12 birds with them.

IMG_0376

Fresh from Buxton Farm in Virginia, Mr. C joined us to share his wisdom on how this whole thing worked. He has his own flock of birds he will be butchering this weekend. He spent a month at Buxton Farm, a collaborative grower with Polyface farms, butchering hundreds of birds during May. He even shook Joel Salatins hand! We all thought that was pertty neat ;) He patiently gave Jacob some good tips on gutting. Mr. C is the oldest son of 10, Jacob the oldest son on 7.

I liked that.

IMG_0385

L.W. enjoying his job! The W’s boys are pro’s at this. Their Daddy used to be a butcher so they have had the best training! I really should have taken pictures of our surroundings. It was a dreary day, but you could see across hundreds of acres of farmland from the W’s home, Mt Baker in the background..it is just gorgeous.

IMG_0383

Jacob focusing.

”Don’t hit the gallbladder, don’t hit the gallbladder”

“Uh…Daddy?”

IMG_0390

Mr. McD is a chef who teaches at our local community college. He helped out with quality control and cutting up the fryers. He taught us where the “oyster” is, the tenderloin and how to make these mini drum leg things along with other neat stuff. Who woulda thunk?

IMG_0388

Here is the cute bucket filler. To the right is the chill tank filled with ice water. After the chickens were QC’d they were brought down to 40 degrees quickly, then cut up, bagged and placed into a freezer on a trailer.

IMG_0401

Here is another QC officer

 IMG_0395

Emma, hoping for a chicken of her very own.

After all was done, we boiled the backs, picked the meat and kept the broth. Giblets were packaged for Grandpa and Paul. Breasts were de-boned and frozen individually on cookie sheets then packaged. Drums and thighs were put in packages of 10 for our family’s dinners and gallon bags of wings for movie nights.

As you can see we really had the best crew(a chef, a butcher, a Buxton apprentice, multi-generational). What I loved was the air of this morning. Such a respect for God’s creatures, our focus being on raising healthy food for our families while honoring the Lord in how the animals are cared for and treated, following His design. The boys were not silly, there was no grossing each other out, it was just a job that needed to be done, 11 weeks of hard work coming to fruition.

Thank you Lord for our good friends and great times shared as we all acknowledge these things come from your merciful hand.

New addition(s)

IMG_0428

Our new septic system is IN. Inspectors have been coming and going today, I hope it all meets their approval. We had gone out of our way to make sure the system was NOT above ground, but level. We checked with the county, our designer purposefully designed it that way…we thought. One small line in the wrong place on the design plans and we now have an above ground field, right in the middle of our yard. Sigh. Can’t fix it, by the time Paul got home from work yesterday, it was too late to change. Yesterday really was one of those days. On a happy note, we have a large excavator in our yard(in the pic it looks small, but it isn’t!) The boys go out there and stare at it….no doubt dreaming.

IMG_0432

We had a mild winter and the mice and rats are terrible. This is our attempt at organic farming. Two new 8 week old kittens, Sadie and Tiggy.

IMG_0440

If at first you don’t succeed, try , try again. Callie did not come home. We assumed the coyotes got her or she had trouble having her kittens and died somewhere. Craigslist brought us this look-alike Bailey. She was paper thin when we got her a few days ago, <again, sigh> but like Callie she is growing…and growing…in the abdomen area. We hope this is because we are feeding her so well, but a friend stopped in, looked at our cat and said “Oh! You got another pregnant kitty!” ….thanks Cara.

IMG_0439

Then this morning after I went to the dentist to have them tell me there is nothing noticeably wrong with my aching tooth, we stopped by Lynden Farm and Garden. They had turks and guineas! I have always wanted to try guineas so we picked up 5 along with 2 more bourbon reds. So fun.

IMG_0438

These older turks above are the only fruit from 3 rounds of eggs in the inky. Many eggs unfertile, some just never hatched, but these 5 are hardy as ever and feathering out nicely.

I also have a small little shihtzu that looks like she ate a cantaloupe. She is due any day with about 42 puppies. At least that is my estimation by her size, I do think she will make the Guinness book.

I love all the babies around.

One of the those days...

Elijah is sick and crying non-stop. Rock-rocks are not helping. I reeeeally feel sorry for the poor little guy, I just want to make him better.

Gracie is so trying my patience today every time I turn around. I think she is wearing padding.

House is a wreck.

Our new septic system is being installed today and the excavator operator(no real fault of his own) accidentally whopped off half my apple tree, peach tree and birch tree today. I really liked my trees.

Our water pump quit working. Notta. Nothing. Is the well dry? Is the pump toast? It's a hot day and my animals are thirsty, the toilets reeeeeally need to be flushed and the dishes are stacking up at amazing speed. The girls are down at a neighbors filling bucket to bring home.

Hubby, being frustrated, is on his way home from work early to help solve problems. It is hard to have so much going on at home, people working, problems coming up, pumps not working..when you can't be there.

I am sitting on Gracie's bedroom floor listening to my baby cry in the next room while I keep Gracie in bed, in case of emergency I can get any child to sleep in 7min with this little trick and I had to pull it today.

I keeping thinking of the scripture "Be content with such things as ye have for He himself hath said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" It is one of those days where contemplating salvation through Christ is the only thing that keeps me a smiling Mamma..as long as I have that, I have everything.

Jessica and Angel

Houston…we have a problem.

IMG_0408

Daddy does not like horses, nor do we have the room to keep one. We own animals that produce or work, not pleasure pets that eat a ton of feed only to give kisses and rides. Jessica has forever had the typical girlish attraction to the beasts. She daydreams of owning a horse, draws pictures and asks what if’s. We have horses in the field next to our home. Last time the owner was here, he mentioned that Jess doesn’t need a saddle or bridle to ride Angel, she only needs the halter she has on. As soon as his pick-up was around the corner that girl was a’sittin on the back of that horse.  It quickly came to the point the horse would no longer listen to Jess without something more than a halter on. Jess was commiserating with her friend Christiana, who tucked that thought away in her little heart. The next time she came over she brought a bit that she had woven reigns from bailing twine onto and she helped Jess attach it to the halter. She showed her how to put molasses on the bit and slip it in Angels mouth. It was magic! A brand new horse. Jess rides her at least 1/2 hr a day and says the horse has had a good workout, but I know it is JESS that is building up confidence in the horse and Jess has had a good confidence workout. The horse could stand to do a bit more as she is a fat ole thing.

So that brings be to the two pictures here. Every time Jess goes outside she brings a little nibble of grain from her pocket for Angel. Angel has become like a puppy dog trotting to the fence like when she sees Jess…in return Jess’s heart melts and gets this smile a mile wide. The four horses in the field stay in a tight little herd. Notice the above picture? Angel is away from the herd, staring in the direction of our house, just standing there..seemingly moping. It was too cute. I can’t help but think she is waiting for Jessie.

 IMG_0413

I am apprehensively happy for Jess, but keep reminding Jess the horses usually go in the Fall when the pasture fails them. She needs to spend her time thanking the Lord for this blessing of riding every time she is on her back, knowing it will end soon. But while the summer is here, she is the happiest 13 yr old in the county.

Muddy Feets

IMG_0344

That blasted mud hole that mysteriously grew in my front yard after the construction trucks were gone is a source of so joy. Why? Well, dirt makes any day better.  Jessie took the little ones out to play and this was her idea of *play*.

IMG_0349

Two chubby muddy little feets.

IMG_0351 Mud snowmen baking in the sun. And yes, it happened. Someone left the front door open and those two chubby little feet above came traipsing through my living room carpet to show me a hand full of gushy mud. <sigh>

   IMG_0346

Ma’boys. I asked daddy when he called on his lunch break if I could have his boys do something constructive to help him. He said they could continue taking siding off the house, so I told them to get started. Little did I know all the siding left was 7ft up. They, by themselves, made this scaffolding set up a plank and finished the job. They amaze me, at their age I would have used that as an excuse NOT to work.

Going to the chapel and we're...

gooonna see a weeeeedding...

Oh goodness I never would have thought a wedding would cause this much excitement in our home. Our sweet friend Ms. C is getting married tomorrow. Now, this wedding is super exciting to our family because this is a beautiful courtship wedding. 5 years ago we'd never heard the term outside of old books, much less known what is was, but boy has it captured us now. We are seeking God's Word and learning as much as we can(for every courtship looks different) and here the Lord puts a Godly family in our lives and gives us a beautiful example from start to finish! What a joy watching this all happen first hand, I am so excited for what the future brings for our family and no longer get anxious or worry about...well...what all parents worry about at some point.

I have been asked a million questions today about marriage. Jessica, who is the most inquisitive(and rightfully so!) wants to know all the details of the wedding, which I just do not know. Will she have a cake? Do you think it will be big? I wonder what her dress looks like? I wonder what he will look like? I bet her Daddy will cry. Will my Daddy cry? I chimed in and said I bet her Mamma will cry too, I will! Jessie was asked to possibly serve at the wedding, so she is busy dreaming about her job if they do need her. Outfits for the children have been picked out for the big *wedding* by Jessie and Emma, suits pressed. Gracie came floating down the staircase all dressed up in her version of "wedding day clothes". I have never been this excited for someone else's wedding before, it's just goofy.

I think the clincher for my girls will be Ms. C and Mr. H's first kiss at the alter. Someone will mention something about it and everyone melts in giggles and the boys slap their forehead and turn red. Ms. C and Mr. H have never given their heart to another or given away their first kiss. Something again that is such a hard concept to grasp in today's world.

Since Ms. C lives in Lynden and Mr. H lives in Oregon, the wedding is half way down the state so we have about a nice 4hr drive to make in the morning. Thank you Lord for bringing these families into our lives and showing us a better way than what we did. It is all about honoring you in with our lives.
