Why We Homeschool

Greetings! Before you read this post, I want to warn/remind you I am pro-home schooling ;) and feel very strongly that home schooling is the best option for Christian families. I don’t think this comes as a surprise to anyone ;). This post reflects our beliefs and my hope is to encourage and give food for thought.

Because it is the beginning of the school year, I have entered into several conversations where ladies are discussing why they choose to home school. Many of these ladies are contemplating schooling at home. I love encouraging others in this area! For me, there are days where there is what seems like constant(and I mean CONSTANT) discipline, arguing between siblings, laziness, disobedience or lying. There are days that I struggle to keep my head above water, like everyone else. It would make life so much easier to put the children on a bus, take a deep breath and do my own thing.

So, why do we do what we do? When I listen to others, the most common answer is "a better education". It is no secret homeschoolers score higher, yes, but is this my reason? No. To tell you the truth, a well-rounded education and high scores are a ways down my list, it is there and, Lord willing, will continue being accomplished, but it is not why we homeschool. In the class provided by the State of Washington to “certify” me to “teach” my children”(Bitter? No, not me) stated that if you simply kept your children home with you, provided a rich, loving home environment, did no formal teaching at all, your children would still score passing grades if tested as a public school student of their same grade. Now that caught my ear!

The second most common answer(I hear) is for a "Christian education". Gods Word, a Christian worldview, Creation Science as the center of all learning. Is this my #1 reason? No. Again, this naturally happens in a Christian home.

I want to pass on, not my religion, but the knowledge and realization of Christ and the salvation he brought to men through His death on a cross. His realness, His presence. I do not want my children to merely "follow the leader" with us. Something like 85% of children raised in Christian homes are completely turning their backs on their God by their late teens??! These are very scary numbers. I do not want to suffer the consequences of heartache from a rebellious child. Can we ever be exempt from having rebellious children? No, I may very well have way-ward children, no one is guaranteed *saved* children by actions they do or don‘t do, but if we walk in His ways and preach(and live) Christ crucified over and over and over for the 18 yrs or more we have them in our home, may the Lord be gracious and bless our efforts.

So, let me start to explain why we homeschool. Let's go to a city park on any summer day. I inevitably meet another mother sitting on the bench watching her vibrant 4 yr old running circles...up the ladder, down the slide, up the ladder, down the slide. We Start chit-chat and the mother states how smart and energetic this little one is. She is right. What a beautiful creature she is! She may be a handful, but she comes when Mommy calls, she begs Mommy to "Watch this Mamma!" is the apple of her mothers eye AND her Mamma is the apple of HER eye...HER everything, HER world. Mamma excitedly announces to me(almost always with a stifled apprehension) that her sweet little girl is starting Kindergarten in the Fall. This is where my heart sinks. That sweet little child, most likely, will not be that same sweet little child in 1, maybe 2 years. In a peer setting(Christian or not) most children will learn to talk back, repeat bad words, be angry, vent feelings, hit, you fill in the blank. I know my own children are like mockingbirds. ;) Her peers will have her heart by the end of grade 2, not her parents. She will be more persuaded by the words and actions of her friends after spending at least 25 prime waking hours with them, than by the rest of the evening at home. This is scratching the surface.

Homeschooling, however, is not some miracle answer..actually homeschooling has little, or nothing, to do with it. It is the fact that you show your children they are of high worth to you and worth your sacrifice of having them stay home to kiss every ouwie, to pry compassionately when they have a hard heart, to speak the Words of Christ to sooth their souls in all the little dramas that life brings. To be there. To keep their hearts. To keep them transparent. To rock them(even a gangly 12 yr old likes to be rocked, don‘t let them fool you ;))To teach ME patience, to teach ME compassion, to teach ME diligence, to create in me that gentle and quiet spirit I long to have. To fulfill our roles as keepers at home and to purify our lives of our smelly sin.

I once thought I couldn't handle homeschooling, I was right - not without the Lord's strength and mentors He provided when I asked for them. I did not want to deal with my children’s increasing sin. It is tiring and mentally exhausting to “train them up in the way they should go”. In time the Lord taught me to see what is best, eternally best, for each child He has placed in our home for us, and solely us, to teach, train and love. That and I only get a new student once every other year ;)

So, why do we do this? To keep our children’s hearts, to protect them and teach them. We want them to know their God, not know of Him, but know Him as their Father. His presence, their sin, their need for Him, His forgiveness, His death, His everlasting promise. May they never be satisfied with praying a prayer and resuming life.

My children are the most sanctifying tool the Lord uses in my life. It is like having 7 little mirrors reflecting my sin back(yikes), because boy are they quick to imitate us.

Oh there is so much more I could talk your eyes off, but I won‘t. This is my heart and I am passionate about it. I LOVE having my children home and guess what? My children love it too. ;)

"I have no greater joy than to hear that my

children walk in the truth." 3 John 1:4

Happy Birthday Mom!

It's my mom's birthday today. I won't tell you how young she is, but it is something like 4x7-8+12+177/4x3-80+.25-4=??

I would like to honor her by letting the children blog about their grandma. My children are so blessed that they have two of the best grandmas a child could have and they get to see them often, how wonderful is that?! My mom has been my biggest support while raising my family. She is just a phone call away to help, from how to boil eggs(Sept 1993) to mending new jeans a little boy ripped on the barbed wire fence. I am embarrassed to say this, but it warrants mention that she STILL does ALL my mending. She bakes a meal out of the blue for us when I've had a trying day, has bought all the diapers my children have ever used(add that one up!) and comes for coffee every Monday afternoon, without fail. I could go on and on and on. Mom, you are indispensable to me...my #1 encouragement and always there to be an *adult ear* even if I call for no other reason than that! Happy birthday, I love you.

She HATES having her picture taken, hence the "I don't like this" look on her face.
See if you can see the common thread in these messages....FOOD! ;)
Gracie - You wanna say happy birthday Grace? "No." What would you like to say to Grandma? "Wuv oo" What do you like to do with Grandma? "I wike gamma, sit on wap" What does Grandma give you? "cookies n jooce"
What would you like to say to Grandma for her birthday?
Micah - "I would like to say she is a nice grandma. I like to watch movies and eat cookies and eat my breakfast and eat my dinner at her house and have sleepovers and stay with her. I want to live with her forever. Can I go live with her now?(no!) I love you Grandma!"
Emma - "Happy birthday. She's nice bringing us on birthday dates. I loooove those. I like her kitchen.(why do you like her kitchen) Because it is so beautiful(and what else) and she has cookies(that's what I thought). I love you Grandma."
Daniel - "Dear Grandma, thank you for the food on Sundays and boy you make wonderful cake! Why I like my grandma is because she always gives me cookies without me having to ask and she walks us to DQ when she babysits. I like her kisses. HB G-ma."
Jacob - "Thank you Grandma for your happy attitude your loving kindness and for having us over to watch us when dad and mom are out. I loooove going on birthday dates with you and getting hugs and kisses. I love you very much."
Jessica - "Happy Birthday Grandma. You're the best grandma anybody could ever have. I love the way every time we come over she greets us at the door with a smile and a hello and hug and kiss for everybody. She makes me feel very special to her. I appreciate the way she goes out of her way to take us on birthday dates and how she offers her home for us to have sleepovers. I love you so much Grandma..."

Only an eleven year old boy...

would ask if there is a Klutz book on how to build an engine.

That would be an awfully heavy book son, if it came with the parts. Too cute.

Dear Emma MADE me take this picture. "Mamma! You GOTta take a picture of this goats udder! She is packed with milk!" Emma literally begs to milk the goat. It is Jessica's morning, but she insisted on doing it for her...woohoo, gotta love this child.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
At this moment;

I am on the couch eating my breakfast typing.
Jessica is picking up Apples To Apples that was spread around the floor by Gracie.
Jacob is eating breakfast in the sun at the table in a contemplative mood.
Daniel is putting on his coat to help Emma lead the goat to the stand.

Emma is grabbing an english muffin and running out the door to milk.
Micah is a monster truck making truck sounds and running around the house.

Gracie is sitting pretty watching Jessica. (Don't ask why she isn't picking up the game)
Elijah has himself wrapped around my ankle fussing, hoping I'll pick him up, which I gladly will.
I need another cup of joe.

M.O.B. Moms

M.O.B Moms will be having our very first meeting this coming Thursday evening at 6:30 at the Fairway Cafe. It is a newly formed group welcoming mothers of large families or for those who desire a large family. We will be meeting for a time of fellowship and sharing ideas on how we run these large households smoothly! I am so looking forward to meeting new ladies and hearing insights from those who have gone before us and from those along side us! The only down side is we HAVE to order a dessert in order to NOT be charged a room fee of $50. So please order a dessert with no guilt!

"Unless the Lord builds the house...

They labor in vain who build it." We started building. After hearing from some friends how the people before them had buried a Bible in the foundation of their home, we decided to use that idea. Early last Saturday morning, Daddy and the children sat around the kitchen table searching the Scriptures for verses pertaining to building a home and building our lives on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Then each person wrote down their verse on a piece of paper and attached it to the rebar reinforcement. This sparked thinking and priceless conversations in our children. We will then, down the road, make a wall-hanging that lists the scriptures for them to see as they grow up.

We were all so excited, the cement truck was coming to our house. I had three very giddy boys!

Arlen, our neighbor, came over to help with the pouring, as did my brother Jeff and Paul's father who lives with us now. The truck backed in and the pouring began.

I was amazed at the patience my hubby had! I would have gathered all the children up and sat them in the house with a movie or such for this day, but not him. He gave each child a trowel, hammer or whatnot and gave them a job...assembly line style.

Gracie was acting Job Supervisor and L & I Inspector.

That was last week. This is today. The floor joists are set.

Look at that beautiful living room!! I can't even imagine.

Lots of scrap wood means inventions! A swing for 9.

And, of course, we can not blog without cute pictures of said baby. He's so happy now that I am off dairy! He is still up 2-4 times a night, but it is brief and to the point so I am not exhausted at all, the Lord has been so gracious to me as I rarely feel tired.

On his knees and ready to roll!!

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's....

a TOOTH! A big white pearly ole tooth. My children have never teethed before 7 months so this one caught us off guard. He was sitting on my lap a'chewin my finger when I thought.."oh, that felt sharp" It happened two more times before I flipped him over and tada! That explains the last few worse than normal, sleepless nights!

My little man is 6 months old TODAY, six months. We haven't had a go getter like this one in a while. He was sitting up, pushing up from his tummy to a sitting position, rocking on his hands and knees and attempting to pull himself up on his crib bars at the early age of 5.5 months. He will take off crawling any day now. And now THIS! This is hard on Mamma!

It is there...really. It had just come through that day(yesterday).

On the home front. This is my living room this morning. When you have 6 children making forts the room gets wrecked pretty quick. It was worse. I take this picture because the T. family is blessing us with their presence tonight at the dinner table and I hope this room will NOT look anything close to this when they get here. Yikes!

BTW Mrs. T, if you read this, when I told the children who was coming over my daughter Emma squealed with delight and ran off saying something about getting her room clean and preparing dolls for her best friend Zoe. It was so cute.

Here is a updated shot out our living room window...the foundation is in place.

Take 1. Take 2. Take 3. Take ???

1st Day of School - Take 1

Tuesday - Woke up to a very messy house after Labor Day weekend.

We wanted to start today, but life happens. We wave at the herded children riding on the big yellow school bus as it passes by our home. My children feel so sorry for them and wave sympathetically as they pass.

We had no banana split supplies.

How can one start a school year out right without banana splits?

1st Day of Homeschooling - Take 2

Wednesday -

We did it! We woke, got our chore charts done, ate a wonderful breakfast of banana splits for the official first day of school. THEN...I got a phone call which had me running from that moment forward. Not a good day, details purposefully left out. Wednesday was a blur.

We tried, and boy was it worth the try!

1st Day of Homeschooling - Take 3

We needed to bring Grandpa in to have knee surgery at 11am, then picked up at 3pm. I was going to use the time to shop, then I remembered I had 7 children. 7 children + 4 hours in Bellingham did NOT sound fun. So we turned it into a school day. Hey if PS can call a half day of games "school", then we can call a trip Bellingham, the Museum and the Seashore "school". We had fun touring the temporary Children's Museum, the Marina and feeding crows our sandwich crusts.

Baby was wide eyed and bushy tailed the whole trip. He does not like being taken out of his nice cozy home.

By the time we got in the truck to come home, Eli started crying...and crying...he cried aaaaaall the way to Lynden. Every one was quite tuckered out.

We did get school officially started on "Take 4". Our last big box of curriculum arrived and it was like Christmas time, can you believe that? Everyone was so excited to get their books and head to the table...My prayer is to keep that enthusiasm going!

Boys Become Men

You know, I am awfully proud of my boys. They amaze me by their wisdom, answers, bravery, chivalry, skills...at such a young age their daddy has taught them more about their God and practical life skills than most men. May I brag...just a little? When we went up to Silver Lake camping a couple weeks ago without Daddy, these young men(8 & 10) jumped right in. They unhooked, stabilized and leveled the travel trailer. They got the water and electricity hooked up without any guidance whatsoever. How neat is that? Oh, don't get me wrong, my boys can also get in a pot full of trouble...they're boys. They can be mischievous, daring, curious and naughty. But I am thankful their hearts are soft and still in their daddy's and mamma's hands.

(Pardon their dress! Oh that is terrible!)

This afternoon was a milestone. It is hard to take a life of an animal. It is no laughing matter and not meant to be done with silliness. It is a serious thing. Jacob killed his first animal by hand, meaning, not with a gun. He took our old rooster who we have tried to give away for the last few weeks(I tried!) and he ended his life with an ax. If you know Jacob, you know he is tender-hearted. After the initial shock and a couple tears of killing the animal he went back out to finish dressing out the bird.

BTW, this was completely 100% the boys idea to butcher up the bird for dinner. Daddy would have gladly done it, but the boys wanted to surprise him.

That with a couple other chicken breasts from our freezer and we had a wonderful chicken casserole. Fresh from the garden we had fried chard, corn on the cob, rainbow carrots and baked, seasoned potato wedges. The whole feast for 9 cost $2.40 for the casserole ingredients. The most inexpensive meal in a long time!

mmMMmmm..Paul's rainbow carrots. They make for an interesting dinner side.

The problem with sisters...

My poor son...

A county girl and her rooster.

Caught cha! The fence was hot, the doors were closed how was it that she was always escaping?! Jacob, Emma and I got sneaky!
