Road trip!

Well, if you consider an hour and a half drive a road trip. I do. Half of us are heading off to the Christian Heritage Family Discipleship and Homeschooling Conference, oh joy! I get to shop for our 2013 curriculum tonight until I drop. I will have six, count them, six, students next year! I never would have guessed the Lord would do this for me. He is so faithful, merciful, all-enabling, rich in kindness, patient, I praise Him. I am learning not to fret at the anticipation of an added student. He has always been faithful to give me what I need to incorporate another child at the study table.

Food is packed for both the leavers and the stayers, house is clean. At this point may I stop and say my kids are the BEST. Do you know that I was being watched last night by my eldest son and as soon as I went to bed at 11pm(!), he waited until Daddy and I were asleep, then he woke up the older children and  they all came downstairs and CLEANED my house. It is beautiful and a huge check off my list! What a BLESSING they are.

This morning we have 80lbs of chicken coming in that I need to process before leaving, but that really shouldn’t be a big deal and Daniel has a dentist appt in prep to get teeth pulled next week, then lunch and we are outtahere.

I best be mov’in. Winking smile

That’s what we’re doing, and doing it well.

At 4pm today…

And I took each of my kennel dogs out into the sunshine and fresh green grass for a run. I am so thankful for our day of rest Lord! Meditating on His goodness and faithfulness today.

Hovander Park

Saturday was spent in Ferndale while Daddy was  *delegating* at the Republican County Convention. We visited Fragrance Garden, walked the boardwalk and the children ran up and down the tower until they were pooped. I stayed on the ground. DSCN2719DSCN2721DSCN2722

Feeling educational, we brought our Audubon book of birds, a notebook and pen to catalog all of the ducks we saw. We left only seeing one, a widgeon, like that counts, and Micah dropped the Audubon book in the lake. <sigh>

Creation was beyond beautiful that day…

One eventful day…

I thrive on days like today. I don’t know why, but I do. Maybe it is the challenge?  Maybe I’m just crazy? I’ll go with the latter.

 DSCN2712[1]

This morning started with a trip to the dentist office. THE trip to the dentist office. I was told three hours total and I’d have my boys back. Four and a half hours later, they arrive with their shiny new gear. Aren’t they handsome? They look great and seemed pretty proud. I, only slightly disappointed in half a day gone from home, resolved to get right home and tackle the day. Laundry, dinner, school still loomed.

Got home and Lydia was crying. Jess said she had been crying a lot so I put her on my back in the Ergo, that always makes her happy.;) Then Franz called and they had animal feed for me…now…by 4pm. I made arrangements to leave…again. Then a phone call that our little doeling we sold yesterday was refusing to eat and she needed to come back to mamma, she was getting weak. We met at Franz and I got animal feed and a doeling. I got home, ran her out to the barn and she nursed well,  regaining strength.

I went in my house. Jess had started dinner, Yay Jess! I  threw Lydia on my back again, finished making  kombucha, did a couple dishes and someone yelled that Elijah threw up on the couch. This is where things got fuzzy. I got him in the bathroom where he threw up again several times, dinner was burning, I ran to pull it out, I came back to Elijah. Just as I bent over Lydia threw up all over my back, my hair, herself and the floor.  Sigh. I love my family. Thankful for the excitement the Lord throws into our life and thankful for days like this that keep me young.

Ice Welding

Invented by my boys on a rainy day…

DSCN2699

Materials needed:

  • A towel to place on your working surface.
  • A bowl that has been placed in the freezer for a few minutes(cover bowl)
  • Syringes
  • Small bowl of ice water(to draw up into syringe)
  • Large bowl of ice with a metal lid(an upsidedown metal cake pan works great, too)
  • Fresh ice from the freezer, easily accessible

1. Make sure your working surface(metal lid) and cover bowl are nice and cold.

2. Take two pieces of brand new ice out of the freezer and place them side by side on the metal plate. Make sure they’re touching.

3. Weld them together by dropping 4-6 drops of water on the edges where they touch together. DSCN2703

4. Quickly place the frozen bowl over the ice cubes and let them sit for about 2min as they bond together.DSCN2705

5. Place one piece of ice over top the two as pictured and two more pieces on the sides. Weld together with 4-6 drops of water, quickly cover and let bond. DSCN2709

My kids made some pretty intricate stuff yesterday, the boys especially enjoyed it because they were *welding*. I would think welding in the freezer would give much better results. Give it a try! Worse case scenario - you have water on the floor and a science lesson learned. Not bad.

Home - Welcome to Toshiba

I had to leave that heading. That is what Toshiba *thought* would make a nice default heading for me…nice of them, huh? They also left a link for you wonderful people to go to their site, but I removed that. Wow. Talk about forward.

My old computer was duct taped, scotch taped and rubberbanded together. Now that our long awaited tax refund arrived, Paul and I ran into B-ham and purchased another cheap laptop, yay! This time the Windows Live Writer is fanTASTtastically wonderful and I’m hoping with it’s ease of use, blogging will pick up again. But….I’ve said that before.

Sheep Butchering

It's a...live. The blog is alive. It isn't dead, really, I have just been doing other things. Better things. Family things. Have I told you lately that I LOVE SPRING???  I love getting dirt under my nails, spraying goat milk on my children as they walk by, snuggling day old goat kids, chasing escaped leghorn chicks, working in the warm greenhouse, watching all the little starts lift out of the soil, kittens, broody hens, dandelions in chubby fists, worms, sun with warmth, the woodstove only burning at night and the kids outside squealing away.

Here is a brief synopsis of my new ventures this Spring. Just when we think we have tackled everything we'd care too, something new pops into view and off we go. This Winter/Spring I have decided to persevere to feed my family healthier food while on a budget. Those two have never worked together for me, but after prayer and gleaning wisdom from other wonderful women in my life, I am learning. My children(and us parents) are eating a lot better and reaping the benefits. I am brewing kombucha every other day religiously and everyone is LOVING it. How delish and refreshing. Then we are also brewing 2 qrts of kefir every morning for breakfast(I never thought I'd do this). Again, everyone loves it, I couldn't ask for better children...really. Kefir isn't something one takes to immediately. Then there's chevon(goat) and mutton(sheep) we butchered ourselves, a first for us. On my to-do list this Summer is lacto-fermenting foods. After reading Nourishing Traditions by Sally Falon I am more than inspired to give it a go.

Junie our milking doe gave birth to twin doelings and Nice, our new doe, gave birth to Maple. All doelings this year! Yippee! Junie's kids are going off to a family this Wednesday and Maple is staying with us. We will then have Junie all to ourselves. Oh the joy.

The children are all doing well, schooling, working and playing away, Jess has been soaping and enjoyed being a teen leader for horses at the WC Youth Fair, Jacob has been welding, woodworking and reading. Daniel, our theologian, has been roping every moving animal and woodworking. Emma took her goat to YF and enjoyed the socks off learning how to care for a goat and also building forts out in the tall grassy field. Micah is a fireball of energy, always talking, questioning and reasoning. He is on his bike most all the time. Gracie. Hmmm...Gracie. She found Jessie's old Loving Family dollhouse and will sit in front of that for hours if let be. She loves banana's and the sandbox. Elijah Wilhem also loves bananas, his baby sister Lydia and his new trike Grandma bought him for his 3rd birthday. Lydia will be 10m next week. She is walking around the furniture, NO teeth, can play pat-a-cake, say mama and raise her hand at the dinner table.

Life is good, life is purposed, life is continually weeded and kept uncluttered as best as we can. These times are so sweet we can't rush through them only to look back and grieve. It just isn't worth it.

Enough already. So. We had this sheep. remember last year when Paul came home with two lambs in the back of his truck for Daniel? He was ecstatic and loved being a shepherd for a year. There was a blond sheep and a black sheep. The black sheep, David, grew this really large rack of curly horns and became rather...well...mean. The blond sheep had these little 1" horns and was really nice. It is at this point I will admit I am the one who castrated them, and I am thinking that I only got one of the two on the black sheep so he was more male than we thought. My bad. Anyhow, David will knock down my little kids when they are in the pasture so he was given the death sentence by Daddy. Not wanting to miss a future homeschooling opportunity Daniel, Jacob, Emma and I sheered him bald and placed his wool in a sack. Here is where the story begins.

Daniel thinks he is pretty hot stuff after winning second place the WC Youth Fair for roping in the Jr. Rodeo. Even though David will walk right up to him, he roped him.

Danny did a great job raising this guy. He loved his sheep, he was a great shepherd, but knew their purpose. These kids amaze me at how level-headed they are when it comes to taking an animal's life. Now me? Being a city kid, I would cry b.u.c.k.e.t.s when my caterpillar/dog/rat/cat/hampster died, as if it were my sibling. As a family, we thank God for the animal, we thank him for His provision. Each animal that finds it's way to our family is respected and cared well for, but everything has a purpose and is either producing or harvested, that's just life here, there is no room for dead weight.

Everyone 7 and up chose to watch as Daddy shot and drained the sheep. Pretty non-eventful.

Then these two guys had knives placed in their hands and everyone else stood back and watched the smoke rise from these master butcherers. Really. These boys are crazy good. I think so.

"Take your coat off and stay a while" "Don't pull the wool over my eyes" Oh the puns. It was bad.

Jacob and Paul trimmed off meat while Daniel QC'd.

Dan with the heart and liver and the bowl of meat to the right. It was coooooold out. I stoked up the fire for them to warm them up. I love my hard working men!

Dan was impressed by the size of the liver. Don't quite know what we'll do with it yet. No, I don't want recipes..no way. We spent an hour hand grinding half the meat, there must be a better way. We cycled through all the children, Daddy and I.  Our biceps were aching. I cut up a bunch of stew meat, but there is a good 30lbs to grind. Thank you Lord for our first sheep harvest!

Homemade Toothpaste

I love this recipe! I’ve been looking for a good home made toothpaste for sometime, one that doesn’t taste like baking soda and pleasing to children. I am going to make it with my own unscented castile soap. If you try this, come back and let me know how you like it, or if you have a favorite recipe, post it. I’d love to hear what you use Hannah K. ;)

Enjoy!

Mom’s Homemade Toothpaste

3-4 T. vegetable glycerin (food grade) or coconut oil

6T. Baking Soda (aluminum free)

2 tsp. Dr. Bronner’s Baby Mild Liquid Castile Soap (unscented)

4 drops stevia or 1 tsp. xylitol (xylitol is supposed to prevent tooth decay!)

20 drops therapeutic grade peppermint essential oil

1-2 drops therapeutic grade Thieves essential oil blend

If using Xylitol as the sweetener, I mix it with the Castile soap first, so that it has a chance to dissolve. I don’t like my toothpaste to turn out grainy. However, it may be that it would dissolve anyway, I just haven’t taken the chance. Then I mix all the ingredients together with a whisk.

Pour it into a glass jar. Any glass jar will work, even a plain old mason jar; but, a decorative one will make you feel good. :-)

Okay, here is what slowed me down in getting this post up. I couldn’t find a convenient way of storing my homemade toothpaste. First, I tried a plastic squeeze icing bottle. Then a friend reminded me that it’s not a good idea to store essential oils in plastic. So, I found a really cute glass soap dispenser. Well, the toothpaste was too thick for it, and I almost ruined my dispenser!

I wanted healthy, but I also wanted convenient. Finally, I settled on a cute little glass jar from Hobby Lobby (a mason jar would work too), and I keep a jelly jar filled with Popsicle sticks right beside it for loading the toothbrush (so the contents of the jar don’t get contaminated with bacteria from your toothbrush).

Thank you Stacy!!
