Randy Alcorn says in his booklet Does The Birth Control Pill Cause Abortions?

“…I heard someone suggest that birth control pills can cause abortions.

This was brand new to me – in all my years as a pastor and a ProLifer, I had never heard it before. I was immediately skeptical.

My vested interests were strong in that Nanci and I used the Pill in the early years of our marriage, as did many of our prolife friends. Why not? We believed it simply prevented conception. We never suspected it had any potential for abortion. No one told us this was even a possibility. I confess I never read the fine print of the Pill’s package insert, nor am I sure I would have understood it even if I had….”

Thanks for posting this. After every child's birth the doctor releasing me from the hospital talked to me about birth control. Not once did they ever tell me that some types do not prevent conception. Most birth control prevents fertilized eggs from implanting or goes a step further and "forces" a menstrual period whether you are pregnant or not. Many people would consider this abortion and it appalled me that most doctors never even mention it.

Doctors are now being trained that a child is not considered *conceived* until after implantation. This is a lie. Change the terminology and you avoid ethical arguements, right? I hate to think of how many children I may have killed during my 4-5 yrs on the Pill.

I really love the statement that how old or how big a person is does not determine how human they are. How true! We start down a slippery slope when we start trying to decide when life begins. At conception? At implantation? At viability (which has changed drastically in just the past decade)? At birth? Some people even believe that human worth can be decided based on self awareness, meaning that an infant's life is less valuable because they are not self aware (and really how would you even measure that). This is a topic that I have been interested in for a long time. I'm especially interested in how we measure worth based on age, mental ability, disability. I think all of that ties into how little value we place on infant life. People and a society really will be judged on how we care for the "least of us" and in that area we are failing miserably.

I just read Randy's book "Safely Home" and saw this book in his list - I was hoping to get a copy of it, as we have been very concerned about this very thing - doctors won't tell, parents of newly weds don't know...so how in the world can couple make informed decisions?????????
I think pastors need to be told so it can be addressed in premarital counceling, and everyone needs to spread the word about this dirty little secret....Satan would love to keep this one under wraps, I am sure....
Thanks, Jennifer, for spreading the word!

I learned about this after years of taking the pill. I am a believer - and I considered long and hard about taking the pill. I read the first part of this book - I intend to read the rest of it. The pill also prevents ovulation -

I believe that this is partly a matter of the heart. I was NOT taking the pill to abort a child I did not want. I prayed about it and felt very strongly that if God wanted me to have a child, I would have one despite taking the pill. I told him so - if you want me to have a baby, FINE!

I do agree that people need the information however and NO doctor I have ever known has told me this info. I learned of it from another christian.

Thanks for posting this! Girls need to know it and women too! I wish I had known all this back in the 90s. A few months ago I was praying and grieving the little girl I lost 3 years ago through a miscarriage and was asking God to hold her for me till I got there. He showed me that my mom was watching over TWO of my little girls for me.

In 1997 I had bought into the doctors explaination that the morning after pill BLOCKED CONCEPTION if taken within the first 72 hours not that it blocked implantation! The pharmacist told me that conception happens in 72 hours and that if the possibility of pregnancy happened then I'd have a full period...but I was assured that since it was only a few hours than this wouldn't happpen. BUT It did happen...I should have a daughter turning 13 in April that I would have LOVED to have amongst all my boys! I've been telling everyone about the morning after pill now..because a few years ago I was an advocate of it. Now that I know the truth I wish more that I hadn't been so gullible to science. God showed me that I was forgiven because I wasn't aware of the truth then. I have 4 wonderful boys that God has given me that I cherish and 2 girls in Heaven waiting for me when Jesus returns to bring his people home. But there are times when I wonder what life would be like with 6 children...come summer they would be 18, 15, 13, 8, 5, and 3. I think I would have loved it. But I smile at the thought that I was told to stop wondering and wishing I could have more babies(cause I can't)and start preparing to be a grandma in the next few years. God is wonderful through all things....and he keeps us through our stupid mistakes of youth too! We serve an awesome God!
